what a hoot!

What's a hoot? Creating this paper pieced owl of course! ...sorry, I just had to say that.

Ahem.

Anyway, I just love owls, don't you? They make such cute accents in scrapbooking, home decor, clothing, jewelry and the list goes on. I've made other paper pieced owls in the past for page accents but have wanted to create a larger owl to use as seasonal decor.

I did some searching on the web to decide what style I'd make my owl. I found this fun owl on Martha Stewart's website and decided to make my own with a few variations. I used some great papers from Fancy Pants and their large black buttons made the perfect eyes for my owl.

Below are some instructions to create your own if you'd like.

1. Sketch your owl design or use an existing template. Here's a cute one from Jenny Kolenda.
2. Cut shapes to make owl from patterned paper.

 3. Add machine stitching to some of the pieces.

4. Trim several short lengths of ribbon.

5. Adhere ribbon to back of owl's head for some funky fringe around your owl's face.
6. Assemble pieces for owl's face.
7. Add punched circles of paper to owl's body, layering them as you go.

8. Finally, add the wings, and that's it! You're finished!

I loved adding lots of machine stitching for extra texture.

Below you can see that I gently curled the bottom of each circle up for added dimension. I also added some foam adhesive under the wings toward the bottom. As you may have noticed, I just love adding texture and dimension to my projects! ;-)

Thanks for stopping by! I hope you're enjoying a wonderful weekend.
